FDA – A News report published on healthline.com states that certain breast implants could slightly increase the risk of a rare type of lymphoma. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration first discovered a potential link between breast implants and cancer back in 2011. However, it’s not breast cancer, but an immune system cancer known as anaplastic large cell lymphoma or ALCL. ALCL is a rare form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma which affects about 0.25 people per 100,000.
Breast implant associated ALCL also known as (BIA-ALCL) can develop in fluid and scar tissue around the implant. Like any traditional form of cancer, breast implant associated a LCL can spread if not treated and eventually lead to death.
According to the news article a 2018 study discovered a link between an increased risk of BIA-ALCL and breast implants. The study’s authors noted that the risk was small and they presented the statistics rates below:
