DETRIOT, Mich. — The General Motors Corporation (G.M.) announced an urgent recall for one of its most popular brands due to a threat that the vehicle might catch fire. City News 1130 reported that the recall concerns several Chevy Silverado pickup trucks. G.M. said that these trucks could catch fire if owners used the optional engine heater block. G.M. advised that owners and lessees of these particular trucks not use the optional engine heater block until G.M. develops a method of repairing the problem.
G.M. announced that its 2019 Chevy Silverado models 4500, 5500, and 6500 that were sold in colder climates have the defective optional engine heater block installed. Additionally, 2017 to 2019 Silverado 2500 and 3500 along with the GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 are involved in this recall campaign. All of the recalled trucks have 6.6-liter engines.
G.M. is working on a repair for the problem. At this time, the company advises truck owners and lessees to avoid using the optional heating block until G.M. can determine the cause of the problem and how they can repair the problem. G.M. said that the cords that run to and from the heater or the terminals on the heater could fail and short circuit. A short circuit could trigger an electrical fire. G.M. did not say how the company learned of the defect. Notwithstanding, the automaker announced that they had not been notified of any injuries concerning this defective heater block.
G.M. continues to work on a resolution to the problem. Once they find a method to repair the problem, then truck owners and lessees should receive notice concerning when repairs will commence and how to obtain recall service. As with all recalled autos, there should be no charge associated with the recall repairs. G.M. will notify its customers as soon as they can do so.
