WASHINGTON, D.C. — Contigo, the manufacturer of water bottles, must recall six million of its children’s water bottles as a result of a choking hazard. The recall campaign just announced by Contigo involves their Contigo Kids Cleanable Water Bottles along with the replacement lids for the water bottles. Contigo’s replacement lids were recalled in August of 2019 for a serious of incidents unrelated to the current recall program according to WWAY-TV 3.  Contigo announced the recall after fielding 427 complaints indicating that the spout detaches from the lid. Additionally, the company reported that they received 27 reports of parents removing the silicone spouts from their children’s mouths. Contigo sold the recalled items at various outlets like Costco, Target, and Walmart, along with other online outlets from April of 2018 until February 7, 2020. The prices of the recall products range between $9.00 and $24.00.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) enforces federal regulations concerning consumer goods. The CPSC especially enforces regulations relating to small parts on children’s items that are a choking hazard. Companies like Contigo are responsible for following all federal regulations when introducing consumer goods into the market.

The CPSC says the regulations regarding choking hazards were passed to help prevent small children from putting tiny pieces of toys and other items in their mouths, thereby allowing the child to swallow the item or could cause choking episodes. The regulations ban toys and other consumer goods that are designed for use by children three and younger accessories, which might contain tiny components and have parts which, if broken, could become small parts.

The products covered by the anti-choking and anti-swallowing regulations are wide-ranging. The anti-choking regulations concern toys, dolls, nursery equipment, baby furniture, dolls, strollers, exercisers, playpens, and baby bouncers. This list is not exhaustive.

The consumer regulations define a small part. Under the rules, a small part is one in which fits into a test cylinder that is 2.25 inches in length by 1.25 inches wide, which represents the opening of a throat in a child aged three or younger.
