UNITED STATES – As reported in an online news article published by hamodia.com, Clear Eyes and Target brand eye products are subject to a nationwide recall amid concerns that the eye products may not be sterile.
Altaire Pharmaceuticals manufactures and sells eye products to various retailers across the United States. Altaire has issued numerous recalls of its eye products, and the recall list continues to grow. The recall was initially issued following concerns that the products may not be sterile. Altaire has cited “management concerns” about quality control of “critical systems” in one of the company’s manufacturing facilities as a reason for the recall. Altaire states that none of the finished products have tested outside the boundaries of sterility. However, a recall was necessary, given a lack of sterility assurance.
Altaire’s widespread recall has already affected CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens Pharmacy, and Walmart store brands. The most recent recall notification regarding Altaire’s eye products includes both Target store brand eye products as well as products under the brand “Clear Eyes,” which is sold at many different retailers. Altaire’s recall also includes some prescription eye products, but most products are over-the-counter (OTC) and sold as store brands for multiple well-known retailers.
Customers rely on products to be sterile for use, which simply means free from bacteria and other living microorganisms. Whether a product is sterile or not can be difficult to determine from looking at the product. Testing is typically needed to identify whether a product is unsterile. If products are not sterile, and therefore, may be contaminated with bacteria or other microorganisms, customers and patients may be at risk of developing infections, some of which may be fatal. Some individuals may be more susceptible to infection, including, among others, young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.
