WASHINGTON, D.C. — On May 9, 2019, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled the line of Beckley Entertainment Hutches due to the risk a shelving falling and injuring users. The agency said that approximately 3,400 recalled furniture pieces were sold. The furniture company distributed and sold the recalled furniture pieces. The company said that the shelf might be secured by adding hardware for support. Customers hit by falling shelves reported two minor injuries.
Minh Thanh Company Limited, Ltd, a Vietnamese company, manufactured the Beckley Entertainment Hutches subject to recall. A Canadian company identified by the CPSC as Magnussen Home Furnishings, Inc. imported the products from Vietnam. Havertys Furniture Companies, Inc. based in Atlanta, GA sold the recalled furniture in its stores and online. Havertys offered the Beckley Entertainment Hutch line now subject to recall from January 2016 until February 2019. The product retail price was approximately $1,500.00.
The CPSC identified the recalled entertainment hutch as having either a weathered charcoal finish or a dovetail gray finish. The hutch can accommodate an 80-inch television set in the center cutout. There is a shelf above the void for the television and drawers below the space for the TV. The entertainment hutch stands 56 inches tall and is approximately 69 inches wide. The weathered charcoal finish hutch has an SKU # of 0-4000-3197. Meanwhile, the dovetail gray finished hutch as a SKU# of 0-4000-3538.
The CPSC announced that Havertys received 12 complaints from consumers concerning the top shelf falling from the hutch. Out of those 12 incidents, two people complained of suffering minor injuries. The problem stems from insufficient hardware supporting the top shelf. Consumers can contact Havertys and request a kit they can install themselves or ask that a technician install them free of charge. Havertys is not accepting returns of the entire unit during this recall campaign.
