CVS Pharmacy Eye Drops and Ointments Recalled

UNITED STATES – According to a news clip published online by boston.cbslocal.com and an online news article published by www.nbcphiladelphia.com, certain eye drops and ointments sold at CVS Pharmacy have been added to a nationwide recall of eye products that may not be sterile.

Altaire Pharmaceuticals, Inc. manufactures eye products that are sold and distributed to various retailers throughout the United States, including CVS Pharmacy.  According to an FDA public health notification, Altaire had concerns that some of their eye products may not be sterile, prompting a massive nationwide recall that involves multiple retailers.  Walgreens Pharmacy was the most recent example, and now CVS Pharmacy has joined a growing list of retailers who now must inform their customers about the recall.

No injuries, illnesses, or deaths have been reported by customers who used the affected eye products sold at CVS or any other retailer.  Altaire stated that it has voluntarily recalled all CVS products as well as those of many other retailers, and so far, all eye products have passed testing intended to identify whether any products were not sterile.  Altaire recalled the eye products as a precautionary measure following the discovery that some of its eye products may not be sterile.

While nobody has been harmed by any of the eye products subject to widespread recall, the consequences of becoming ill from a non-sterile product are severe enough for the FDA to categorize the recall as Class I, which is the most serious recall designation available.  Class I recalls are issued when a product has the potential to cause serious injuries or death to patients.  An unsterile product can certainly cause a person to suffer harm if that person becomes ill.  This is especially the case with children, the elderly, a person with chronic health conditions, and anyone else with a compromised immune system.
