A news report posted on several news sources, including newsweek.com, a southwest Florida hand sanitizer company has initiated a nationwide recall of 26 lots of its hand sanitizer product due to a possible dangerous bacteria contaminant. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also issued a recall announcement. The affected antimicrobial hand sanitizer does not contain alcohol and is used when soap and water are not readily available to the user. The hand sanitizer is meant to decrease bacteria on the skin that might cause diseases.
The company’s Durisan Antimicrobial Solutions Hand Sanitizer purportedly contains high amounts of Ralstonia picketti and Burkholderia cepcia complex, which are very dangerous bacteria. The hand sanitizers might be harmless unless the product enters the bloodstream through an open wound, cut, or scrape. The product can be potentially deadly if the bacteria enters the user’s bloodstream and produces a lung infection.
According to the company’s recall announcement, medical professionals who use the potentially contaminated hand sanitizer and treat high-risk patients could lead to localized lung infections or bloodstream infections, requiring patient hospitalization.
The affected hand sanitizer product was manufactured from Feb. 1 – June 30, 2020, and the antibacterial products were distributed to retailers around the country. The FDA states that the contamination was found during an audit that “focused on production scale-up during the height of the pandemic.”
