Car Chargers Are Being Recalled Due To A Fire Hazard. A Wisconsin company is recalling about 18,000 car chargers because they can overheat when used under low-voltage conditions and cause fires.
The government and Milwaukee Electric Tool Co., of Brookfield have received six reports of overheating chargers, which plug into cigarette lighters and often are used to charge power tools, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Monday. No injuries or property damage have been reported.
Recall Involves Impact Wrench Kits
The recall involves Power Plus chargers, as well as Impact wrench kits that contain the chargers. A label on the front reads, “Milwaukee … POWER-PLUS 9.6 Volt – 18 Volt AUTOMOTIVE CHARGERS.”
Impact wrench kits containing these chargers have serial numbers between 241A401520001 and 241A402080126. The serial number can be found on the side of the kit.
Home centers, hardware stores and industrial distributors sold the chargers and wrench kits nationwide between March 2000 and April 2002. The chargers cost about $115; the kits sold for about $325.
Consumers should stop using the chargers immediately and return them to a company factory service center or authorized power tool service center, the CPSC said. Three options are available: an exchange for a new battery pack, a replacement charger or a refund.
