CPSC Recalls Defective Consumer Products. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with the two firms named below, today announced a voluntary recall of two defective consumer products: IMS Car Chargers and Sears Coffee Makers.
International Merchandising Service Inc. (IMS), of Fullerton, California is recalling about 210,000 IMS Car Chargers Used with Power System Plus 3 Million Candlepower Spotlights. The car charger is incompatible with the spotlight’s battery, which can cause it to overcharge inside of a vehicle and pose a fire or burn hazard to consumers. To date, IMS received two reports of incidents of spotlights overheating while being charged with the car charger.
The chargers use Halogen spotlights and were made in China and sold at Sears and K-Mart with the Power Systems Plus/UST 3 Million Candlepower Spotlight bearing model number HSLR30S on its packaging and on the instruction manual. The spotlight is black and blue and has a sticker on each side that reads “3 Million Candle Power.” The chargers sold nationwide from October 2007 to June 2008 and retailed for about $20.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled car charger and should contact IMS for information on how to receive a free replacement car charger; the firms is advising that consumers can continue using the spotlights without the car charger. Recall Involves Kenmore Coffee Makers
About 145,000 Sears Kenmore and Kenmore Elite Coffee Makers, which were sold nationwide at Sears, Roebuck and Company; The Great Indoors; and K-Mart stores as well as online at Sears.com and Kmart.com have been recalled. Sears received 20 reports of coffee makers overheating, including 12 fires that caused damage to counter tops and cabinets and also resulted in plastic melting on the floor. The coffee makers’ wiring can overheat, posing burn and fire hazards to consumers. The recalled coffee makers were made in China and sold from August 2007 through April 2008 and retailed for between $30 and $100.
The coffee maker recall involves 12-cup Kenmore coffee makers in the following colors and with the following model numbers: Black with model number 100.80006, white with model number100.81006, and red with model number 100.82006. The recall also includes 12-cup Kenmore Elite coffee makers with thermal carafe with model number 100.90007 and 14-cup Kenmore Elite coffee makers with model number 100.90006. The coffee makers’ model number can be found on the bottom of the unit. There is also a Kenmore or Kenmore Elite logo on the front bottom of the maker.
Consumers should immediately stop using the coffee makers and take them to their nearest Sears or K-Mart store to obtain a free replacement coffee maker.
