Maytag Recall Its Refrigerators For Posing Fire Hazard. Maytag is expanding its March refrigerator recall to include an additional 46,000 Maytag, Magic Chef, Performa by Maytag and Crosley brand refrigerators. The original Maytag refrigerator recall was for 1.6 million refrigerators that posed a fire hazard.
According to the recall notice, an electrical failure in the relay, the component that turns on the refrigerator’s compressor, can cause overheating and pose a serious fire hazard. In March, Maytag said it had received 41 reports of refrigerator relay ignition. Of those, 15 reports included property damage that ranged from smoke damage to extensive kitchen damage.
According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC), Maytag has received 23 additional reports of refrigerator relay ignition, including 4 reports of property damage ranging from smoke damage to extensive kitchen damage.
