WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced a safety recall alert for tattoo ink. Routine examinations revealed the presence of microscopic organisms which were suspected to be bacteria in certain lots of ink. KTIV said that the FDA recalled six specific ink lots. However, the FDA did not comment about any illnesses of which it might be aware due to a bacterial infestation of the tattoo ink. The FDA recommends that people who received tattoos recently should monitor their new tattoos closely for signs of infection such as swelling, emission of pus, and extreme redness.
The FDA tattoo ink recall involved the brand known as Scalpa-Ink SA, PA, and AL produced by Scalp Aesthetics in basic black ink. Additionally, Solid Ink Diablo’s red ink produced on 10-19-18 by Color Art, Inc. doing business as Solid Ink or Antone’s Ink was recalled by the FDA. Finally, the FDA also altered customers to the potential that Dynamic Color produced by Dynamic Color, Inc. in black might contain bacterial microorganisms. The FDA advises manufacturers and distributors of these brands of ink to stop selling them. Additionally, the FDA said that tattoo artists must stop using these ink brands immediately. Finally, anyone considering obtaining a tattoo should ask their tattoo artist about the type of ink he or she is using before sitting down to get the work done.
The FDA warned that an infection could grow anytime a human’s skin is broken, like when a tattoo is drawn on the body. The agency also cautioned that a bacterial infection from tattoo ink might bear some of the same symptoms as an allergic reaction to the ink. Physicians can misdiagnose a bacterial infection and mistake it for an allergic reaction. Finally, any person who experiences difficulties after sitting for a tattoo should contact their physician and their tattoo artist to alert them to the potential problem.
