The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning the public to avoid certain hand sanitizer products because they could cause cancer. The FDA’s notice named Artnaturals’ scent-free hand sanitizer as a product that contained “unacceptable amounts” of many different carcinogenic substances. Acetaldehyde, benzene, and acetal pollutants were discovered in bottles that were labeled “DIST. by Artnaturals Gardena, CA 90248.”
The FDA also stated that the issue appears to be limited to a single batch of hand sanitizer, but the FDA has advised customers to avoid buy or using any Artnaturals products. The FDA is advising this because the company never answered the FDA, which prevented the maker from being named and a recall being announced.
According to the FDA’s warning, Benzene was found in the products and the compound can cause cancer in humans. The FDA also says that animal studies show that acetaldehyde causes cancer and other significant diseases or death in humans. The FDA urges consumers not to buy or use products that contain acetal, benzene, or acetaldehyde.
The FDA recommends that the all Artnaturals goods should be disposed of in hazardous waste receptacles and not flushed down toilets or emptied into a sink drains. Consumers may also contact their local trash management centers to ask about obtaining proper disposal containers.
The FDA added Artnaturals products to its lengthy list of recalled or dangerous hand sanitizers. Currently, there are over 260 items on the FDA’s do not use list. The majority of the hand sanitizer products were manufactured and imported from Mexico. A few other banned products were imported from China, Guatemala, South Korea, Turkey, and Poland.
The FDA began keeping track of dangerous hand sanitizers after nine brands that were made in Mexico were found to contain high levels of methanol, which may cause blindness or death to humans.
