Over 70 Infant Deaths Linked to Fisher-Price Rock n’ Play Sleepers, Yet Sales Persist on Social Media Despite 2019 Recall.
Fisher Price recalled Rock ‘n Play Sleepers in 2019 due to infant fatalities, yet these products remain available for purchase online.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that every Rock ‘n Play Sleeper model was recalled due to infant deaths resulting from infants rolling over while unrestrained or under other circumstances.
As of the original recall announcement on April 12, 2019, 30 infant fatalities were reported. Since then, over 70 additional infant deaths have been documented, including some that occurred post-recall, as stated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Moreover, 100 deaths allegedly occurred while infants used sleepers.
Despite the recall, these products continue to be sold online.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission revealed that its chair, Alex Hoehn-Saric, informed Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg that hundreds of recalled Rock ‘n Play sleepers are sold monthly on secondary marketplaces like Facebook Marketplace, which Meta owns.
As per the letter, the CPSC submitted 3,981 requests concerning the product, reporting an average of 306 takedowns per month, or roughly 10 per day, with the majority of requests directed to Facebook Marketplace.
The CPSC states that the average product price is $25, less than what consumers would receive through the recall.
However, a seller on Facebook Marketplace offers the Rock N’ Play Sleeper for over $1,000, disregarding the recall.
The CPSC urges anyone in possession of a Rock ‘n Play sleeper to cease its use immediately and contact Fisher-Price instead. The CPSC also offers several tips for purchasing used products on platforms like Facebook Marketplace or in-person transactions:
Request the brand, model, serial number, and manufacturing date from the seller. This information can also be found in the instruction manual or at CPSC.gov/Recalls.
Prioritize safety when buying baby equipment, avoiding outdated or expired products lacking the latest safety features and any recalled items.
Inform the seller if you spot a recalled product on sale to prevent others from purchasing or using it.
Before selling or giving away a used item, verify whether it has been recalled. Do not sell or distribute recalled products.
