DETRIOT, Mich. — The Ford Motor Company recalled over 270,000 Ford Fusion motor vehicles due to the possibility that a car that the driver believes is in park will roll away. The underlying problem with the transmission could be disastrous. There were a few incidents in which drivers put the gear selector into the park position. Notwithstanding, the car rolled out of the parking space. Engineers working for Ford are diligently working to develop a repair for the problem according to a report appearing on ABC 7 News.
The Ford Motor Company said that it became aware of the malfunction after learning of reports that one person suffered personal injuries when a Ford Fusion believed to be in park, due to the placement of the gear selector, unexpectedly rolled away. Also, Ford learned of three additional instances in which one of their Ford Fusions rolled from the parking spot even though the driver moved the gear selector into park. Ford did not comment on the extent of the personal injuries suffered by the person struck by a rolling Ford Fusion nor did the car company comment about the extent of the property damage caused by the car rolling while in park.
The most recent recall is the third recall of Ford vehicles because of a rolling problem. The previous two recall campaigns involved 550,000 Ford Fusions from the model years 2013 to 2016. Also, Ford recalled their Ford Escape Sports Utility Vehicles from the 2013 and 2014 model years to make the necessary repairs so the vehicles would stop rolling while parked.
Ford does not have a specific repair plan at this time. Consequently, anyone driving a Ford Fusion from the model years 2013 to 2016 must use the vehicle’s parking brake to prevent the vehicle from rolling away instead of using the vehicle’s transmission to hold the car in place. Ford has identified the problem with the transmission. According to the ABC 7 News report, Ford said that the shifter cable could detach from the transmission if the bushings wear down. Ford will notify owners and lessees about any repairs available once they determine a safe repair plan.
