Artificial Sweetener Cancer Lawsuits
According to an online news report posted on biospace.com, a recent study conducted by Sorbonne Paris Nord University and the French National Institute for Health and Medical Research indicates that artificial sweeteners may increase incidents of breast cancer by three more cancer events per 10,000 people. This study also contradicts the traditional beliefs between artificial sweeteners and cancer risks. The French study also implies that artificial sweeteners increase obesity and breast cancer risks.
The artificial sweetener study analyzed self-reported health information from over 102,000 French adults. The study’s researchers focused on artificial sweetener use amongst this group. The research study’s findings, published in PLOS Medicine, propose that people who consumed large amounts of artificial sweeteners, around 79mg daily, had a 13% greater chance of developing cancer. The study shows that the use of aspartame presented a 22% increase in cancer development. Scientists stated that increased risks were observed for obesity-related cancers and breast cancer.
Should the French study’s data prove to be true, the data would contradict earlier large-scale studies. For example, one study in Europe performed by the European Food Safety Authority claims that artificial sweeteners were not dangerous as long as the quantity consumed was within the recommended daily limit. The dangerous level of aspartame would be a 12-pack of diet cola per day or more.
In their report, the French research group stated that their results would need to be replicated in other cohorts. However, the study does provide novel and important insights for the re-evaluation of artificial sweeteners by health agencies globally.
According to the news article, breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer in women in the United States. About one in eight women will develop some form of breast cancer. Breastcancer.org states that there it estimates that there will be 287,000 cases of invasive breast cancer and around 51,000 cases of non-invasive breast cancer diagnosed in the United States in 2022.
