Furniture Recall Necessitated by Child’s Death

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Major retailers are pulling a three-drawer dresser which poses a risk of injury or death to children because of the dresser’s propensity to tip. The manufacturer of the dresser issued a voluntary recall according to WMC Action News 5. The chest can tip over and trap a small child in the event that the dresser is not secured to the wall properly. One child died after becoming trapped by a fallen dresser. As a result, the U.S. Consumer Product and Safety Commission, or CPSC, issued a recall alert and warned consumers to remove the dresser from areas where small children have access if the consumer has not secured the furniture piece to the wall.

The CPSC reported that South Shore Industries, a Canadian company, sold over 300,000 of these faulty dresser drawer units. Some of the recalled dressers were sold as a component of a larger set while some were sold separately. The CPSC reiterated that only the three-drawer unit was the subject of the recall campaign and not the entire bedroom set. Retailers such as Walmart, Target, and Amazon sold the recalled product.

South Shore Industries offers consumers three options to comply with the recall campaign. The company offered to pick up the chest of drawers for free and give the consumer a full refund of the purchase price. Alternatively, the customer can remove the drawer sides from one side of the piece of furniture and return them to South Shore Industries. South Shore Industries will provide the packing material and pay for shipping. The company will offer a full refund after it receives the package. Finally, consumers can request a kit that will prevent tipping when installed. South Shore Industries will pay for the initial installation of the tip-prevention kit.
