According to an online news report posted on mlive.com, General Electric (GE) has initiated a product safety recall involving 155,000 refrigerators after approximately 37 injuries were reported. GE’s recall announcement states that it has received 71 reports of the affected refrigerator’s freezer drawer handle separating and causing 37 injuries. Three of the incidents reported involved serious injuries. The recall was administered on April 14, 2022.
The U.S. Consumer Protection Safety Commission’s website states that the affected refrigerator’s freezer handle can disconnect when someone attempts to open the freezer drawer and this is causing a fall hazard. The model, brand name, and serial number for each refrigerator are printed on a label that is placed on the upper left side of the interior of the refrigerator compartment. The recalled model numbers include:

Those who purchased the recalled refrigerators are urged to contact GE Appliances to find out if their refrigerator is part of this recall. If so, the GE will set up a free in-home service call to replace the freezer’s handle mounting fasteners and re-installed the handle. GE will also give the affected customers instructions for safe use while waiting for the repair. All known owners are being contacted directly by GE.
