According to a Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recall notice, the King of Fans, Inc. is recalling 190,000 Hampton Bay Mara ceiling fans after receiving dozens of reports of the fan blades detaching during use, causing injuries. The recalled fans are sold exclusively at Home Depot retail stores and on Home Depot’s website.
The distributor, King of Fans,” issued a recall notice stated that the defect is an “isolated manufacturing defect.” The recall notice also provides a link to an instructional video that guides customers through the identification process to determine if they have purchased one of the recalled ceiling fans.
So far, there have been about 50 reports of blades detaching from the ceiling fans while in use. Two of those incidents resulted in injuries when the blades detached and “flew” into people. In four of these situations, the “flying” blades caused property damage.
Home Depot sold 182,000 of these defective ceiling fans in the United States. Home Depot sold another 8,800 of the faulty ceiling fans in Canada. The affected Hampton Bay 54-inch Mara ceiling fans were sold on Home Depot’s website and in its retail store nationwide from April 2020 until October 2020. The price of the ceiling fans was approximately $150. The Consumer Product Safety Commission stated that the recalled Hampton Bay Mara fans were available in 4 color finishes, polished nickel, matte black, black, and matte white. The ceiling fans came with a white remote control with a color-changing integrated LED light.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has directed purchasers of the defective fans to immediately discontinue using the fans and contact the distributor, King of Fans, to receive a free replacement fan. Purchasers may also return the recalled ceiling fans at their local Home Depot to receive a full refund.
The following numbers are the UPC numbers for the recalled ceiling fans. The UPC number is located on the silver rating label placed on top of the ceiling fan’s housing assembly.
