A news report published on news24.com states that several popular brands of hand sanitizers have been found to contain dangerous levels of Benzene, a known carcinogen. Benzene is one of the most dangerous cancer-causing chemicals and is ranked as the third most cancer-causing substance. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Benzene is a carcinogen. The World Health Organization’s cancer research department places Benzene in its highest cancer risk category.
The U.S. online pharmacy, Valisure, tests consumer products for safety. Valisure conducted an analysis of approximately 260 bottles of hand sanitizer. The study found that 168 brands and 17% of the test samples contained levels of Benzene.
Valisure analyzed 260 bottles from 168 brands and discovered that 17% of the samples contained detectable levels of Benzene. Twenty-one bottles, or 8%, had Benzene levels above two parts per million, which is the temporary limit allowed by the Food and Drug Administration to alleviate the hand sanitizer supply squeeze, and the level may be tolerated for a short period of time. Fifteen different brands of hand sanitizer had some levels of Benzene. According to the testers, the samples came off of retail store shelves.
According to Valisure, most established brands did not contain unsafe benzene levels, but several new brands contained unsafe levels of Benzene. Some of the Benzene tainted hand sanitizers were being sold on Amazon.com Inc. and at Target retail stores.

Benzene is known to cause certain types of blood cancers, including leukemias. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health states that Benzene can be absorbed through the skin.
