Just for Men Adverse Reactions Including Breathing Problems. Users of Just For Men hair-color products for facial and head hair have reported a variety of adverse reactions including chemical burns on their skin, severe itching, rashes, painful blisters, and even breathing problems.
A Massachusetts man who colored his beard with Just For Men suffered facial swelling and painful burning, the Missouri News Tribune reports. He applied the product according to the package directions, he says, and then felt a “burning sensation.” After rinsing off the product, he felt fine, but the next day his face and neck were swollen and he had a weeping rash. At the emergency room, he was treated with steroids and Benadryl.
User Experiences Anaphylaxis
Hives, redness, burning, itching, and swelling can develop with minutes after using the product, or some time later. Wheezing, sneezing, and difficulty swallowing can develop and in rare cases, the user experiences anaphylaxis, a life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention, according to the Mayo Clinic.
The Just For Men website recommends that men do an allergy patch test on the inside of the elbow before using the product. To do the test, the user applies the product to a quarter-size area of clean, dry skin. The area should be checked over the next 48 hours and if there is no reaction, then it’s safe do a full application, the company says.
Some regular users who complained of allergic reactions asked if the company had changed the ingredients, but in 2012 a company representative said the formula had not been changed in about seven years, according to the News Tribune.
