L’Oreal Hair Relaxer Brought on Hairlessness. Two women are suing L’Oréal over a hair relaxer that allegedly caused scalp burns and hair loss. The product claims to make hair “instantly thicker and fuller, reversing damage from day one,” The product named in the lawsuit is Softsheen Carson Optimum Amla Legend Relaxer Kit. The relaxer is marketed as being “no-lye” and containing “Amla oil from India”. The class action lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles.
According to the complaint, the plaintiff suffered burns and subsequent scabs on her scalp after using the product. She says she has to wear a wig to cover up the damage and allegedly still suffers from damaged hair as a result of using the relaxer. Another plaintiff alleges that she suffered scalp irritation then hair loss. She claims that she now wears hairpieces and takes expensive vitamins in attempt to combat the damage.
L’Oréal False Advertising
The lawsuit alleges that L’Oréal engaged in false advertising, fraud, negligence and misrepresented the product. A company spokesperson told Buzzfeed “We do not believe the allegations in this lawsuit have merit. For more than 100 years, L’Oréal has been committed to the safety of its consumers.”
The suit alleges that L’Oréal has been aware of this problem for years because it contains harmful ingredients and has received a number of consumer complaints. The suit cites complaints on the company’s own website that detail hair loss and breakage, scalp irritation, blisters and burns.
According to the lawsuit, L’Oré altargeted consumers looking for a healthy, natural way to relax their hair. They allegedly touted the use of Amla (gooseberry) oil to lure consumers when in fact there is actually very little of the ingredient in the relaxer. Additionally, the suit claims that it is mixed with many other harmful ingredients such as hexylene glycol and butylene glycol. The product also allegedly contains sodium hydroxide, or lye.
