Hair Straightening Lawsuits

A Uterine Cancer Lawsuit has been filed against the cosmetic company L’Oréal. The L’Oréal lawsuit complaint alleges that the company’s chemical hair straightening products increased the risk of uterine cancer. New reports state that the Plaintiff filed her chemical hair straightening uterine cancer lawsuit in Illinois on behalf of a 32-year-old woman from Missouri. According to the lawsuit, the victim’s uterine cancer “was directly and proximately caused by her regular and prolonged exposure to phthalates and other endocrine disrupting chemicals found in Defendants’ hair care products.”

Attorneys for the Plaintiff believe that this uterine cancer lawsuit creates a “watershed moment” for African-American women who have been using chemical hair-straightening and relaxer products for years and now have been diagnosed with uterine cancer.

Uterine cancer is a kind of cancer that forms in the layer of cells that compose the inner lining (endometrium) of the uterus. Common symptoms can include bleeding between periods and vaginal bleeding post-menopause. The primary treatment is to remove the uterus. In some advanced cases of uterine cancer, a patient may require chemotherapy or radiation treatment.

The connection between uterine cancer and certain chemical hair straightening products has been reported by researchers at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The Plaintiff stated in a news conference that she had been using hair relaxers since she was approximately eight years old. She was diagnosed with uterine cancer back in August 2018. She endured a complete hysterectomy back in September 2018. The Plaintiff was only 28 years old when she had a hysterectomy, and her dreams of having children were taken from her. The Plaintiff also claims that her family has no family history of uterine cancer or any other type of cancer.

Plaintiff stated to news outlets that millions of young African-American girls use chemical straighteners and chemical relaxers. She also explained that she used chemical hair-straightening products from 2000 until around March 2022. She is seeking monetary compensation in the amount of at least $75,000, according to her lawsuit.

The news report states that two other chemical hair-straightening uterine cancer lawsuits have been filed in New York and California. The lawsuits also claim a connection between chemical hair-straightening products and the Plaintiffs’ cancer diagnoses. There will be other lawsuits filed as more women become aware of the issue. This lawsuit was filed a few days after a study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute estimated that women who use hair-straightening chemical products have an increased risk of developing uterine cancer by age 70. The study suggested that women who used hair-straightening chemical products had a 4% chance of developing uterine cancer, while those who did not only had a 1.6% chance of developing uterine cancer by age 70.

The researchers also noted that African-American women were more likely to use chemical hair-straightening products. The study’s data revealed an association between chemical hair straightening products and uterine cancer cases were more common among African-American women. African-American women made up 7.4% of the participants in the study but accounted for almost 60& of those who used chemical hair straighteners.

According to the Plaintiff’s attorney, African-American women have been a victim of these dangerous chemicals, and these harmful products were specifically marketed to African-American women. Her attorney also stated that African-American women had been tragically told that they needed to use these hair products to meet society’s standards. The attorneys also stated in the media statement that there would be numerous lawsuits blaming cosmetic companies for aggressively misleading African-American women to increase their profit.
