According to a recall announcement published by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Hearing Lab Technology/Lucid Audio is recalling its children’s HearMuffs following reports of burn injuries caused by defective, leaking alkaline batteries. The Children’s HearMuffs Sound Compression Ear Muff contains AAA alkaline batteries that can rupture, leading to hearing loss, burns, and projectile injuries. The defective HearMuffs Sound Compression Ear Muffs were recalled on September 08, 2022, and the recall affected more than 31,000 units.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall notice states that there are four different models of powered HearMuffs sound protection active sound compression ear muffs that were sold that include the defective AAA alkaline batteries. The four models included in the recall are:
The model numbers are printed on the earphones’ original packaging. The affected HearMuffs have an Active or Soothe Mode, a multi-mode power button to switch from Off, and the earphones were retailed in multiple colors. The word “HearMuff” is printed in on the ear muffs. The recall notice states that only “powered HearMuffs,” which use two AAA Alkaline batteries, are part of the recall.
Owners of the recalled earphones should stop using the affected HearMuffs immediately and then contact Hearing Lab Technology/Lucid Audio to receive free replacement AAA batteries.
Hearing Lab Technology/Lucid Audio has admitted that it has received at least 19 reports of rupturing alkaline batteries but stated no injuries were reported. The HearMuffs were sold nationwide at Sam’s Club, Kroger, and other retail stores nationwide and online at kroger.com and samsclub.com from January 2018 until December 2021 at a price of $30 to $40.
