WASHINGTON, D.C. — American Honda announced that it must voluntarily recall four versions of its popular portable generator systems. The recall, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, or CPSC, stated in a press release that 200,000 units were previously subject to a recall in 2019. However, additionally, 140,000 units must be recalled as well, totaling 340,000. The reason for the generator recall stems from a potential short circuit that could occur within the unit’s inverter assembly if invaded by saltwater. The unit could catch fire if the inverter assembly ignites, thereby causing a potential risk of fire and burning users. Honda said it would repair all recalled units for no charge.
American Honda’s recall campaign involves several units of its portable generators, including model numbers EB2200i, EU2200i, EU2200i Camo, and EU2200i Companion. The generators have either a red cover or a camouflage cover. The brand name “Honda” appears on the control panel along with the model number. A serial number may be located on one of the lower corners of a side panel on the generator.
Any consumer with one of the following generators bearing matching serial numbers should stop using the device immediately and contact Honda right away. Honda’s EB2200i, with serial number range of EAJT-1000001 through 1011342 are part of this recall initiative. Honda’s EU2200i, with serial numbers ranging from EAMT-1000001 through 2098790, are also part of the recall. Finally, Honda’s EU2200i Companion and Camo, bearing serial numbers EAMT-1000001 through 2098790, have also been recalled.
American Honda said that it received thirteen reports of short-circuit damage while in use. A fire started in ten of those instances. No injuries and no property damage from the fires were reported to American Honda or any of the outlets where Honda generators are sold, such as Home Depot. The recalled units sell at a retail price between $1,100.00 and $1,300.00. Home Depot and other dealers sold the recalled generators from February 2018 to January of 2020.
