A Closer Look at How the Flawed Design of Infant Swings by HONEY JOY COMPANY Poses Serious Risks to Infant Safety, Leading to Urgent Product Recall Actions
In a recent development that underscores the continuous vigilance exercised by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) towards maintaining stringent safety standards, infant swings manufactured by the Fontana, California-based HONEY JOY COMPANY have been subjected to a recall. This recall stems from inherent design flaws that present considerable suffocation hazards and possess an incline that is marked as dangerous, posing serious risks to the well-being of infants. These product features notably contravene the provisions stipulated under the Safe Sleep for Babies Act. The swing’s infractions are particularly concerning as it was actively marketed as suitable for infant sleep, despite having an incline angle exceeding the 10-degree limit set by the aforementioned act.
The CPSC has outlined in its Thursday recall notice that such inclined sleepers have been implicated in several infant fatalities and injuries, notably when infants transition from their back to a stomach or side position without being adequately restrained. A grim illustration of this peril was reported by CBS News in 2020 when a 10-month-old baby, unfortunately, succumbed due to entrapment between the base and frame of a MamaRoo brand swing seat acquired in 2016. Incident reports detail the traumatic experiences of parents who encountered close calls with these dangerous products, with children experiencing severe distress and exhibiting signs of strangulation.
In relation to the infant swings from HONEY JOY COMPANY, numbering around 170, no incidents of injuries have been recorded thus far. However, the CPSC maintains that the product’s design unequivocally violates the Safety Standard for Infant Swings, coupled with the Safe Sleep for Babies Act. These contentious swings, retailing between $110 and $120, were available for purchase exclusively on Amazon from November 2022 through January 2023. The specific models subjected to recall, BB5569US-GR in gray and BB5569US-BE in beige, feature a blend of metal and plastic components complemented by a cloth seat, with “Babyjoy” emblazoned on the front.
Additionally, these swings, measuring approximately 28 inches in height and width and 24 inches in width, are facilitated by AAA batteries or an AC adapter. They are fitted with multiple accessories, including a head pillow, a five-point restraint system, an adjustable seat, a canopy with dangling toys, and a musical feature. The identification of full model numbers is possible through reference to the packaging. The CPSC underscores the urgency for consumers in possession of the HONEY JOY swing to discontinue its use forthwith and to seek guidance from HONEY JOY on obtaining refunds and the correct disposal procedure for the swings. To facilitate this, both HONEY JOY and Amazon are initiating contact with all identified purchasers to impart this critical information and address any arising concerns.
