UNITED STATES – A teen star from the television show “Dance Moms” has had her makeup recalled because it contains asbestos. JoJo Siwa, who at 16 years old has become a YouTube sensation with young girls, had a makeup kit on sale at Claire’s retail stores, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced it contained unsafe levels of asbestos.
Asbestos has been proven toxic to humans and can cause serious and fatal diseases, like lung cancer and asbestosis. For this reason, the FDA does not allow products containing unsafe levels of asbestos to be sold to consumers in the United States. The FDA found that the eyeshadow in the Claire’s JoJo Siwa makeup set contained harmful amounts of asbestos fibers.
The set contained several makeup items and was sold in a plastic heart container. Each set included nail polish, lip gloss, and eyeshadow. It was created through a collaboration between JoJo Siwa and Claire’s, and the store reportedly pulled it from the shelves right after the FDA’s announcement of the recall. Claire’s also said it would be accepting returns of the makeup set and would provide customers who bought the recalled makeup full refunds.
However, Claire’s also doubled down on the item’s sale, saying that it passed safety standards in other countries.
“Claire’s stands behind the safety of this item and all other Claire’s cosmetic items, as such trace amounts are considered acceptable under European and Canadian cosmetic safety regulations,” a statement from Claire’s reads. “Claire’s also supports increased FDA oversight of personal care products.”
Neither JoJo Siwa nor anyone from her team has released a statement at this time regarding the recalled makeup.
