WASHINGTON, D.C. — WGRZ 2 reported that the Consumer Product Safety Commission, or CPSC, published a recall notice involving baby walkers called Kids & Koalas sold on Amazon.com because a child could fall and become trapped in the device. Entrapment in any device, including a baby walker, could be fatal to a small child. The recall initiative involves 3.600 baby walkers that were sold on Amazon.com for $89.00 to $123.00 from September 2017 through July 2018. The CPSC says the walkers could fit through a normal-sized doorway instead of being made too wide to fit. Also, the CPSC says that the walkers were not designed to stop at the edge of a step even though federal regulations require baby walkers to have a guard in place to prevent a child from tumbling down a flight of stairs.
The CPSC criticized the design of the Kids & Koalas walkers for the potential hazards they pose to young children just learning how to walk. In addition to the lack of protective measures that guard against the child plummeting down a set of stairs, the leg holes are extremely wide and allow a child to slip through. The child’s neck could become trapped in the device and lead to suffocation.
The recalled baby walkers are sold with eight wheels, and the device can fold for easier transport. The height of the seat is adjustable. Kids & Koalas sold the walker in several different colors, including green, black, blue, white, pink, and gray. The brand’s logo appears on the front of the attached tray as well as on the rear of the child’s seat. A tag located under the walker as well as on the packaging bears the model number X002.
The CPSC advised parents and guardians to disassemble and discard these items immediately. Amazon will contact the people who bought the recalled walkers to arrange for a refund. Consumers should be warned that people might have received these items as a gift and should be vigilant about using any walker.
