According to a news report posted on miamiherald.com, Frozen Food Development and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have announced a frozen spinach recall in nine states on Wednesday. The recalled “12-ounce bags of Lidl Frozen Chopped Spinach” may be contaminated with the dangerous bacteria, Listeria. The recall was initiated after testing discovered Listeria in some chopped spinach packages.
Listeria is a dangerous bacterium that may lead to the severe foodborne illness Listeriosis. Listeria can live in foods such as vegetables, uncooked meats, unpasteurized milk, and soft cheeses. Listeria tragically kills around 260 of the 1,600 people who are infected each year in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states. Listeria may also cause miscarriages and stillbirths. Pregnant women, Senior citizens, and children under the age of five years old are more vulnerable to Listeria’s effects. Listeria can cause stillbirths and miscarriages. Listeria symptoms include diarrhea, nausea, severe headaches, high fever, stiffness, stomachaches, poor balance, and confusion.
The two lots of Lidl Frozen Chopped Spinach were packaged in 12-ounce bags. They have the lot numbers R17742 or R17963 printed on the packaging and have an expiration date of 09/10/23. The Lidl Frozen Chopped Spinach lot numbers and expiration dates are found on the back of the packaging. The recalled lots of frozen spinach were distributed to Lidl stores in South Carolina, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Georgia, New York, Virginia, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland.
