According to an online news report Posted on NYPost.com, the United State Food and Drug Administration has opened an investigation into why hundreds of people have reported severe illness after consuming General Mills’ Lucky Charms cereal. The NY Post article reported that customers who ate Lucky Charms cereal suffered severe symptoms such as severe vomiting and diarrhea after consuming a bowl of Lucky Charms cereal.
The website iwaspoisoned.com has over 400 similar complaints complaining of severe illness after eating the popular cereal. The website Iwaspoisoned.com tracks foodborne illnesses. Other troublesome complaints include that the cereal turned their feces green.
One spokesperson from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration stated that the agency has reviewed the incident reports and is investigating the situation. The FDA spokesperson stated that the agency takes the reports seriously, especially when potential adulteration of a food product may lead to illnesses or injury. Depending on the gravity of the situation, the FDA may send FDA investigators to visit those who suffered illnesses and file complaints. The investigators may also collect product samples and launch additional inspections. The FDA reported that they had contacted General Mills about the food illness reports, and the company is aware of the complaints.
General Mills stated to The NY Post that it didn’t accept that its Lucky Charms cereal was making consumers ill, but it admitted to an “ongoing review” of the issue. General Mills has not responded to the Post’s request for comment at the time of this report. Approximately 140 people reported their Lucky Charms-related illnesses between July 2021 and March 2022 to Iwaspoisoned.com.
