The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on September 15, 2022 issued a consumer safety warning concerning “male-to-male extension cords sold on Amazon.com.”
Owners of these hazardous male-to-male extension cords are urged to immediately stop using these extension cords due to electrocution, carbon monoxide poisoning, and fire injury risks. The Consumer Product Safety Commission describes these dangerous extension cords as having two male ends (which include a three-prong plug) and is commonly used to “back-feed” electricity from a generator to a home outlet.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, when these male-to-male extension cords sold on Amazon are plugged into an outlet or generator, the opposite end poses a risk of severe shock or electrocution. Moreover, the electric power flows in the direction reverse of the typical flow of power and can circumvent the safety features of a home’s electrical system resulting in a house fire. Additionally, the CPSC warns that the short length of these electrical cords encourages the use of a generator close to the home, which creates a carbon monoxide poisoning hazard. The CPSC also reports that these electrical cords do not comply with national safety codes, including National Fire Protection Association 70 (NFPA 70).
These male-to-male three-pronged extension cords were sold on Amazon.com and came in several lengths, colors and under different brand names. The electrical extension cords were sold for between $40 and $72. The known Amazon Standard Identification Numbers (ASINs) are listed below. The ASIN is located on the product’s URL bar. The ASIN is also located in Amazon’s product details section.

The CPSC is urging owners of these electrical cords to not buy or sell these dangerous male-to-male extension cords and to dispose of the cords immediately.
