MamaRoo Swing & RockaRoo Rockers Lawsuits

According to a news report posted on cbsnews.com, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the recall of two million MamaRoo swings and RockaRoo rockers following the tragic death of a 10-month-old baby. Another adverse incident report states that one child was found nearly dead, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Thorley Industries. The recall affects 220,000 RockaRoo rockers and more than two million MamaRoo swings that were sold by Thorley’s 4moms line at Target stores and BestBuy Baby stores nationwide. The recalled inclined rockers and swings were sold online at Amazon.com and 4moms.com from January 2010 until August 2022 at a price between $160 and $250. The recall announcement states that 10,000 RockaRoo rockers and 60,000 MamaRoo swings were sold in Canada. Those units are part of this recall.

The recall announcement states that 4moms received two adverse incident reports claiming infants were getting tangled up in the strap when left unwatched in MamaRoo infant swing and after wriggling under the recalled product’s seat. Tragically, a 10-month-old baby passed away from asphyxiation, and another 10-month-old infant sustained severe neck bruising before a caregiver rescued the baby. The infant’s tragic death happened back in December 2020. The other incident happened two years prior, back in 2018.

In the fatal injury report, one of the baby’s parents described their son crawling into a space between the seat and the swing’s base. The baby then got tangled by the product’s strap. The report states that the strap was so tightly twisted around the baby’s neck that the parent had to cut the strap to free their child. The baby sustained marks and had popped blood vessels around his neck.

According to Gary Waters, the CEO of 4moms, the company is deeply saddened after hearing of the two incidents that happened when the infants crawled underneath an unoccupied MamaRoo swing seat. Mr. Waters also stated that their company is offering a free strap fastener kit that they believe will prevent similar incidents from transpiring.

Thorley Industries is recalling its RockaRoo Model 4M-012, and MamaRoo Model 1037. This recall affects the following MamaRoo models that use a three-point harness:

  • MamaRoo versions 1.0 and 2.0 (model number 4M-005),
  • MamaRoo version 3.0 (model number 1026),
  • MamaRoo version 4.0 (model number 1037), and
  • RockaRoo rocker model number 4M-012.

Families who have babies that can crawl should immediately stop using these recalled rockers and swings. Families should also put these products in a place where babies cannot reach them. Customers who purchased the affected products should register for a free strap fastener online. This will prevent those straps from reaching under the swing when the products are not being used.

According to Oriene Shin, Consumer Reports’ policy counsel stated that these tragic incidents are an important reminder common hazards, like a loose strap, can go overlooked until it’s too late. She also stated that parents place their trust in companies to produce safe products and to anticipate hazards.

Thorley Industries can be reached at 4moms.com, or online at https://www.4momsrecall.expertinquiry.com.

The CPSC has already issued warnings to Americans to avoid using infant rockers for sleep after the death of 14 babies who died using similar rockers and swings. Those products were manufactured by Fisher-Price and Kids2.

The CPSC warns parents and caregivers of babies to avoid using any inclined products such as gliders, rockers, swings, and soothers for infant sleep. Moreover, parents and caregivers should never leave babies unattended in these products or with bedding material. Last May, President Biden signed the Safe Sleep for Babies Act into law. The Act bans manufacturing or selling inclined sleep products and padded crib bumper pads, which have been linked to hundreds of deaths.
