PROVIDENCE, RI – According to a news report posted on wpri.com, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has published a safety warning and recall notice (21-064) concerning Massimo Motor Sports Percussion Massage Guns. The Consumer Product Safety Commission stated that thousands of body massagers were sold exclusively at Costco, and they are being recalled due to an overheating defect that poses fire and burn injury risks. One report claims the Massimo Motor Sports Percussion Massage Gun causes over $15,000 in property damage when the product suddenly caught on fire. The recall was announced on January 6, 2021.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission said the lithium battery contained within the unit is causing the fires. The safety recall involves Massimo Motor Sports Percussion Massage Gun model number EM003. The percussion massage guns were sold in four colors: silver, blue, black, and gold. The recalled massage guns also included six different massage head attachments.
The recalled Massimo Motor Sports Percussion Massage Gun is manufactured in China and is imported by Massimo Motor Sports LLC, of Garland, Texas. Massimo Motor Sports LLC has received at least three separate incident reports of the company’s percussion massage guns catching on fire and causing significant property damage.
People who have bought one of the recalled Massimo Motor Sports Percussion Massage Gun massagers are warned to immediately discontinue using the device and contact Massimo Motor Sports to receive a full refund.
Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries typically contain a lithium-ion gel. If ignited, this very sticky gel can heat up to approximately 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit in what is called a thermal runaway. If someone is nearby one of these batteries during a thermal runaway, that person will likely sustain an immediate second-degree burn or worse.
Another safety concern regarding lithium batteries is that when the batteries are on fire, they release a highly flammable, ether-based vapor. The fire becomes a chemical reaction that releases both hydrogen and oxygen byproducts, which adds more fuel to the fire.
