FDA – September 14, 2020 – According to a news report on KSAT.com, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recalled a total of 176 hand sanitizer products due to dangerous methanol (wood alcohol) contamination and reports of hospitalizations due to blindness, vision issues, and death.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration stated that the hand sanitizer product recalls are deemed serious and very unsafe because of the products containing methanol. In addition, the recalled hand sanitizers contain “concerningly low levels of ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol, which are active ingredients in hand sanitizer products.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, for the hand sanitizer to be effective against the coronavirus, it must contain 60 percent or more ethyl or isopropyl alcohol.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials allege they knew of the adverse medical issues linked to certain hand sanitizer products contaminated with methanol. The FDA officials stated that they had issued numerous warnings of injuries such as hospitalizations, blindness, and death. However, the list of recalled products continues to grow and involve large retail chains such as Costco and Walmart.
The FDA is warning consumers to keep updated on the growing list of recalled hand sanitizers as many do not list methanol as an ingredient on the hand sanitizer label. Methanol is a chemical used in solvents, fuel, and antifreeze and is highly toxic. Exposure may lead to serious side effects such as nausea, headache, vomiting, seizures, blurred vision, permanent blindness, permanent damage to the nervous system, coma, and/or death.
