WISCONSIN – According to a news report posted on weau.com, a Wisconsin resident tragically died after eating a listeria-contaminated packaged salad. The Department of Health Services stated that a laboratory-confirmed death had been connected to certain Dole packaged salad food products. The Department of Health Services has not released any identifying information at this time.
The packaged salads were sold under the following brand names:
- Ahold,
- Dole,
- HEB,
- Kroger,
- Lidl,
- Little Salad Bar,
- Marketside,
- Naturally Better,

The affected package salads include garden salads, mixed greens, Caesar kits, and several other types of bagged or clamshell-package salads with “Best if used by” dates ranging from November 30, 2021 through January 9, 2022.
The affected salad products have product lot codes that start with one of the following letters in the upper right corner of the product’s package, “B,” “N,” “W,” or “Y”.
The FDA is warning consumers not to eat any of the recalled pre-packaged salad products and throw the salad products away or return the recalled salads to the store where purchased for a refund.
Listeria poisoning causes severe illnesses, and people over the age of 65, and who have weakened immune systems are at the greatest risk of illness. Possible symptoms include fever, fatigue, headache, confusion, stiff neck, convulsions, diarrhea, muscle aches, and death. The symptoms typically begin one to four weeks after ingesting contaminated food.
The CDC reports that there have been 17 cases of illnesses in 13 states. Thirteen victims have been hospitalized, and a total of two people have tragically passed away.
