UNITED STATES – A brand of pool heater vent has been recalled due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, according to an announcement from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The vent kits are manufactured by Hayward Industries Inc. of Nashville, Tennessee.
The recall was initiated because the Hayward vent kits, which are installed onto gas-powered pool heaters, are not the appropriate size and can allow leakage of carbon monoxide. This leakage can pose a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning to consumers. This recall was initiated on June 12 and applies to about 300 vent kits that were sold in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Seven of the units were sold in Canada, 13 were sold in Mexico, and the rest were sold in the U.S.
The vent kits were sold at retailers carrying pool equipment and online under the brand Hayward. They were on sale for around $265 between March 2015 and April 2019. The recall specifically applies to the Negative Pressure 6-Inch Vent Kit, UHXNEGVT15001. The kit was designed to be used exclusively with Hayward brand gas heaters bearing the serial number H500FD.
The kit includes several items: vent pipe adapter, flue cover plate, sheet metal screws, vent pressure switches, tubing and wire. The kits would have been installed only on Hayward H500FD heaters indoors using 6-inch negative pressure galvanized vent pipes.
Consumers affected by this recall are advised to immediately turn off and stop using their pool heaters, then contact Hayward to arrange for replacement of the affected unit. The replacement will be free of charge to consumers.
