According to a news report on wlky.com, 2020 has seen fewer toy recalls than in previous years. However, dangerous toys are sending thousands of children to the hospital each year. The federal government and agencies such as the Consumer Product Safety Commission have done a great job working with manufacturers to avoid marketing toys that present choke hazards. In 2008, 172 toys were recalled due to a choke hazard defect. In 2020, that number has fallen to nine.
According to Nikki Fleming, a CPSC spokeswoman, the majority of toy-related deaths are caused by choke hazards. The CPSC focused their efforts on the issue of choking hazards, and the results were dramatic and life-saving.
Choking hazards are the leading cause of toy-related deaths. The second most common cause of death from toys are riding toys such as scooters, bicycles, and skateboards.
World Against Toys Causing Harm, or W.A.T.C.H., is a watchdog organization that works to alert the public about dangerous toys before it is too late. Each year the organization lists its “Top 10 Worst Toys of 2020.” Three of the toys on the list have a choking hazard.
