WASHINGTON, D.C. — Step 2, whose children’s toys are best sellers in the market, announced an urgent product recall in both the United States and Canada for some of its popular children’s shopping carts. The plastic shopping cart baskets are prone to breaking or snapping. The broken plastic could leave jagged edges upon which a child could sustain a severe laceration. The Miami Herald reported that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has been informed of the defect and is supervising Step 2’s recall campaign. Step 2 announced that it would send a free replacement part to the consumer or offer a $40 creative toward the purchase of another Step 2 product to be applied to the purchase of another item from Step 2’s website.
Step 2 Little Helper’s grocery carts can break and, as a result, form sharp pieces and edges which pose a substantial risk of cutting the child who is playing with the toy when it breaks. Step 2 acknowledged that it received 22 complaints about broken Littler Helper’s grocery carts. The company, however, said that none of the complaints it received reported an injury. Nonetheless, the company determined the best course of action was to launch the recall initiative.
Step 2’s recall program encompasses three models, which account for approximately 20,000 individual toys. Step 2 said the defective toy models include 7000000, 708500, as well as 8567KL. Not every toy bearing the listed model numbers is part of the recall program. Only those shopping carts with the date codes of 5 and 19 are possibly defective. Consumers can locate the date combination directly under the grocery cart’s handle. Step 2 uses a “date wheel” stamp to indicate when the product was made.
Any consumer who wishes to report a defective Step 2 toy or who wishes to report an injury caused by a faulty Step 2 toy can contact Step 2 through its website or call their customer service line. Additionally, consumers can report these issues directly to the CPSC.
