WASHINGTON, D.C. — WTOP reports that Starbucks issued a recall on May 1, 2019, for its Bodum + Starbucks Recycled Coffee presses due to the possibility the user could experience a serious injury. Starbucks sold over 260,000 individual units throughout the United States and Canada. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, also known as the CPSC, announced that Starbucks would refund the purchase price of its faulty coffee press to all customers. Starbucks initiated the recall because several people suffered injuries when the unit failed. None of the injuries are reportedly life-threatening.
The Starbucks coffee presses recalled on May 1, 2019, were co-produced with the Danish kitchenware company Bodum. CBS reports that the items in question were manufactured with recycled parts. The French coffee presses were sold for around $20.00. Reports indicate that the knob on the press has broken several times while users were pressing coffee grounds. Nine people, eight in the U.S. and one in Canada, suffered lacerations and puncture wounds in their hands and arms when the knob broke.
The CPSC reports that Starbucks sold the coffee presses in its cafes across the U.S. and on their website as well. Starbucks indicated that they sold the defective consumer product between November of 2019 and January of 2019. The product itself was manufactured in Portugal. Consumers are advised that they can return the recalled coffee presses to Starbucks for a full refund which will consist of store credit. Starbucks asked consumers to stop using the product immediately and to contact Starbucks customer service to learn how the defective coffee press should be returned to them.
Any consumer who purchased the product or is unsure of the exact item subject to recall can verify the product’s SKU. The recalled coffee press bears SKU 011063549 which people can locate on the bottom of the coffee press.
