Grocers Are Pulling Organic Food Product Off Their Shelves. Arizona grocers are pulling an organic and natural food company’s products off their shelves due to possible health concerns.
Amy’s Kitchen, Inc. is voluntarily recalling more than 73,000 cases of products containing organic spinach that may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious, sometimes fatal infections, the Mohave Valley Daily News reports. Although healthy individuals usually suffer only short-term symptoms such as fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infections can be fatal in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems. Listeriosis can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
FDA Notify Customers Who Already Purchased Products
According to the company’s announcement, Amy’s Kitchen is not aware of any illnesses related to the recalled products. The national recall is being undertaken “out of an abundance of caution,” based on a recall notice the company received from an organic spinach supplier. Smith’s stores in Bullhead and Fort Mohave, Arizona began pulling products from store shelves after the store received the recall notice, a public affairs representative said. This is a Class 1 recall – the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s most serious recall category – and the store representative said Smith’s said it is making every effort to notify customers who have already purchased the affected products. They have installed signs where the product is normally located and have used robo calls and messages on cash register tapes to inform customers. Product recall information is on the web site, smithsfoodanddrug.com, the Mohave Valley Daily News reports.
Brian Cole, Walmart grocery manager, says Walmart “immediately responded,” removing all of Amy’s Kitchen enchiladas from store shelves, even though the products did not fall within the affected dates. A Target store manager said they were checking to determine whether any of the recalled products were carried in the store, but added that Target “respond[s] immediately to these notices … and will remove any products identified in the recall.”
The recall includes 19 Amy’s products; Vegetable Lasagna, made Jan. 20 and 21, lot codes 30-A205, 30-A215, 30-A305, 30-B115 and 30-CO45; Tofu Vegetable Lasagna, made Feb. 13, lot code 30-B135; Garden Vegetable Lasagna, made Feb. 2, lot code 30-B025; Tofu Scramble, made Jan. 30, lot code 10-A305; Enchilada Verde Whole Meal, made Jan. 30, lot code 10-A305; Spinach Pizza, made Jan. 28, lot code 30-A285 and 30-B105; Brown Rice & Vegetable Bowls, made Jan. 19, lot code 30-A195, made March 3, lot code 30-C035, and made Jan. 20, lot code 30-A205; Stuffed Past Shells Bowl, made March 5, lot code 30-C055; Gluten Free Tofu Scramble Breakfast Wrap, made Feb. 2, lot code 30-B025; Gluten Free Diary Free Vegetable Lasagna, made Feb. 4, cot code 30-B045; and Family Size Vegetable Lasagna, made March 4, lot code 30-C045. Consumers who have any of these products should dispose of them or return them to the store where they were purchased for an exchange or full refund.
