DaimlerChrysler Recall Smart Cars Due To A Defective Lights. DaimlerChrysler is recalling 50,000 of its tiny Smart cars that were produced in 1999 and 2000 due to a technical problem with the vehicles’ rear lights, the company said Friday.
Smart Cars Came Off The Production Line
Smart City-Coupes that came off the production line from February to April and October to December 1999, as well as those from January 2000 are subject to a possible malfunction in the electrical connection between the light switch and the light itself, the company said in a statement.
Markus Mainka, a spokesman for DaimlerChrysler, could not immediately say how much the action would cost, but told Dow Jones Newswires that it would last about two months.
The Smart car went on sale across Europe in 1999. It was developed by Micro Compact Car, a joint venture between DaimlerChrysler and Swatch Group, the Swiss manufacturer of the Swatch wristwatch. In November 1999, Swatch sold its stake in the project to DaimlerChrysler.
DaimlerChrysler has yet to announce when it will introduce the car in the United States.
