RC2 Corporation Recalls Children’s Products Due To A Fall Hazard. RC2 Corporation has issued two more recalls for defective children’s products that were made in China. The latest RC2 recalls include the company’s popular “First Years Newborn-to-Toddler Reclining Feeding Seat” which has a design flaw that can cause a child to fall from the seat. The second RC2 recall involves “First Years 3-in-1 Flush Sounds Potty” training seats that have excessive lead levels in surface paint on plaques attached to some of the training seats. Earlier this year, RC2 was one of the many toymakers forced to issue a recall of Chinese lead tainted toys, and the company’s recall of 1.5 million Thomas & Friends-themed railway toys in June was one of the biggest such actions.
According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) notice, about 100,000 First Years Newborn-to-Toddler Reclining Feeding Seats are being recalled by RC2. The First Years Newborn-to-Toddler Reclining Feeding Seat can be adjusted between reclining and upright positions. The seat includes a tray, reversible cushion and a three-point safety belt. One side of the seat cushion has a sewn-in label at the top which says “the first years by Learning Curve.” This recall includes all feeding seats except those with an “R” stamped inside a raised circle located on the far left and right of the back of the seatback or those with waist strap slots that are nine inches apart. The RC2 First Years Newborn-to-Toddler Reclining Feeding Seats where sold at various retailers in the US between November 2006 and 2007 for about $30.
Reclining Seats Has A Design Flaw
The First Years Newborn-to-Toddler Reclining Feeding Seat has a design flaw that allows restraining straps to pull out of the waist strap slots. According to the CPSC, RC2 has received 38 reports of straps pulling out or nearly pulling out of waist strap slots. There have been 12 reports of children falling out of the chairs.
The second RC2 recall includes 160,000 First Years 3-in-1 Flush Sounds Potty training seats. Each seat has either a yellow chair with a green removable seat and a purple lift out-pot or a blue chair with a white removable seat and green lift out-pot. The words “100 Acre Wood” are molded on the chair back. The plaque inserted into the back of the seat contains molded Winnie the Pooh and Tigger characters. The RC2 training seats were sold in stores nationwide from April 2006 through August 2007, for $20-$25. According to the CPSC, the decorative plaque inserted into the back of the potty seat could have orange paint that contains excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.
Parents should stop using these recalled RC2 products immediately, and call the company for replacement parts. RC2 will provide free replacement straps for the First Years Newborn-to-Toddler Reclining Feeding Seat, and a permanent clear protective cover that covers the plaque included with the First Years 3-in-1 Flush Sounds Potty.
