CPSC Safety Gear Recalls Helmets And Harnesses. Bicycle helmets and safety harnesses sold with hunting ladder stands have been recalled by the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) amid concerns that defects in the safety gear could lead to serious and life threatening injuries.
The bicycle helmet recall involves about 3,000 model 2-D helmets made in China and distributed by Specialized Bicycles, of Morgan Hill, California. The recalled bicycle helmets can be identified by the “2D” printed on the sides of the helmet in the rear. The helmets were sold for men and women in matte black, white, silver, blue, pink, and team colors. The defective bicycle helmets were sold in retail stores and online between July 2007 and October 2007 for about $200.
According to the CPSC, the faulty Specialized Bicycles helmets did not pass testing required under the CPSC’s safety standard for bicycle helmets. This can pose a head injury hazard to riders in a fall. Fortunately, the CPSC has not received any injury reports so far that are related to these dangerous bicycle helmets.
Consumers who purchased a model 2-D helmet made by Specialized Bicycles should stop using them immediately and return them to an Authorized Specialized Retailer to receive a free replacement or a full refund. For more information, consumers can call Specialized Bicycles toll-free at (877) 808-8154 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. MT Monday through Friday, or visit the company’s Web site at www.specialized.com.
The second safety gear recall involves 60,000 Full Body Safety Harnesses manufactured by Gorilla, Inc. of Flushing, Michigan. The recalled Pullover Style Full Body Safety Harnesses model SP40300 were included as an accessory with Gorilla 2007 ladder stands used for hunting. The harnesses bear batch code numbers 020507, 030507 and 040507. The model and batch code number is printed on the label affixed to the harness. The ladder stands were sold at Sporting goods retailers nationwide from April 2007 through October 2007 for between $80 and $300.
According to the CPSC, the recalled Full Body Safety Harnesses could fail during use, resulting in a hunter falling from the tree stand and suffering serious injuries or death. So far no injuries resulting from the defective harnesses have been reported to the CPSC.
Anyone who purchased the Gorilla 2007 ladder stands that included a defective Full Body Safety Harness should stop using it immediately and contact Gorilla for a replacement. Gorilla can be contacted by calling (877) 685-7817 between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or by visiting the company’s Web site at www.gorillatreestands.com.
