Ruleau Brothers Recalls Canned Whitefish After Learning the Product Does Not Contain an Allergy Statement About Eggs, Soy, and Anchovies
STEPHENSON, MICHIGAN – As reported in an FDA safety notification, Ruleau Brothers has recalled one of its fish products after learning that the fish may contain undeclared eggs, soy, and anchovies.
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently released a public safety notification to consumers about Door County Whitefish Smoked Whitefish Pate, and how the product does not identify potential allergens on the labeling.
Ruleau Brothers, the manufacturer of the canned fish, failed to include a statement identifying contents which may be deadly allergens to some consumers. The company issued an allergy alert along with the recall to warn consumers who may be allergic to eggs, soy, or anchovies.
Specific Recall Information
Ruleau Brothers sold the Whitefish Pate to a distributor in Illinois, various retailers, and a local market in Michigan. The recalled canned fish comes in 8-ounce plastic containers marked with the following lot numbers and expiration dates:
- Lot No. 19126 with an expiration date of August 2, 2019;
- Lot No. 19105 with an expiration date of August 9, 2019;
- Lot No. 29029 with an expiration date of August 16, 2019; and
- Lot No. 19093 with an expiration date of August 23, 2019.
Ruleau Brothers issued the recall of the canned fish following an FDA inspection (under contract by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development) which discovered that certain canned fish did not list all ingredients and sub-ingredients contained in the product.
Because the product’s label did not include egg, soy, and anchovies, some of which may have been contained in the product (either as a main ingredient or sub-ingredient), consumers allergic to these foods are at risk of suffering severe illness or even death. Consumers are encouraged to return the affected fish to the place of purchase for a full refund.
