According to an online news report published on Reuters.com, some recall-repaired Philips models can separate from the plastic backing, reducing airflow, which could lead to severe injury or death. The issue is due to a defective adhesive. The United States Food and Drug Administration classified the recall as a Class I recall, which is the most serious type of product recall classification.
Philip’s ventilators assist with breathing in both adult and pediatric patients. This recall follows Philips’ previous breathing machine recall that affected more than five million breathing devices and ventilators in June 2021. That recall was initiated after it was discovered that the sound abatement foam degrades and could shed toxic particles and gas that can cause cancer.
Philips Respironics recalled about 14,000 ventilators last December. The units recalled were distributed from March 1, 2022, until September 6, 2022. According to the report, Philips Respironics did not instantly reply to a Reuters request for comment about the recall. There have been 82 more complaints received by Philips Respironics. Currently, there have been no reports of long-term injuries or death associated with the recalled breathing machines. However, it is too early to tell.
