Animal Feed Supplements Are Being Recalled. A Minnesota company is recalling animal feed supplements contaminated with dioxin, a suspected carcinogen.
Meat and milk from animals that ate the supplement have already gone to market, though state health and agriculture officials say there is no public health threat.
The Quali Tech company of Chaska, about 25 miles southwest of Minneapolis, has been shut down indefinitely while state and federal health officials investigate the source and scope of contamination.
Authorities in Ireland, where the contamination was discovered, notified the company late last month. The worldwide recall was announced Friday.
Mineral Supplement Is Added To Feed
State health department toxicologist Hillary Carpenter said the mineral supplement is similar to a multivitamin for animals and is added to feed in small quantities.
Animals eating contaminated feed would not get enough dioxin to increase the level in their bodies, Carpenter said.
Quali Tech’s supplements are sold in 27 states and seven countries under such names as SQM Mineral Products and Carbosan Mineral Products.
Quali Tech’s attorney, Jim O’Neal, said it’s not clear how long the products have contained dioxin, where it came from or how much contaminated product was sold.
