A news article published on newsweek.com reports that there is growing concern over the Johnson & Johnson one-shot vaccine following the tens of thousands of talc cancer lawsuits that have been filed against the company. According to a CBS/YouGov poll, more than 25% of people polled stated that they would not get vaccinated because of drug company distrust. Those who intended to be vaccinated stated that they would consider the vaccine’s brand.
According to the Newsweek article, some people stated that they wanted to be vaccinated but would refuse to take the Johnson & Johnson vaccine because of the 1,000s of pending talc cancer lawsuits. Most of the talc cancer lawsuits alleged the company intentionally did not warn customers that its talcum-based baby powder and body powders contained cancer-causing asbestos.
Johnson & Johnson did not comment on its COVID-19 vaccine being linked to the talc cancer lawsuits but stated the company “adheres to the highest bioethical standards and guidelines.” Johnson & Johnson has consistently defended its talc products. However, many juries have ruled against Johnson & Johnson. In one trial, the jury awarded 20 women over $4.7 billion in damages. Johnson & Johnson has won in a few other cases and is attempting to appeal the trials it lost.
Medical scientists state that there is no reason to tie Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine with previous allegations against Johnson & Johnson. Medical experts advise people to take whichever vaccine is available to them to end the coronavirus pandemic.
One woman stated that she would not take Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine because of the talcum powder cancer controversy. She said that she doesn’t trust Johnson & Johnson because of the talc-asbestos cancer lawsuits, and Johnson & Johnson cannot be trusted to produce a safe and effective coronavirus vaccine. She also stated that Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine “popped up out of the blue,” while Moderna and Pfizer were reportedly working on their vaccines for several months.
Health experts are urging people to trust Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine and know that the vaccine is safe and was created in a “thorough and transparent manner.”
According to Susan R. Bailey, president of the American Medical Association, every authorized coronavirus vaccine has undergone a transparent and rigorous development process, testing, and all three coronavirus vaccines are highly effective in preventing COVID-19-related hospitalization and death.
