TOKYO- According to wsbradio.com, Toyota Motor Corporation is recalling 2.43 million vehicles because they have a potential defect that causes stalling problems. The recall applies to the company’s hybrid vehicles.
In a statement released on Friday, the company stated that the cars had a slight risk of stalling because they could “fail to enter a fail-safe driving mode.” The issue can lead to vehicles losing their power and stalling. While the issue would not impact the vehicle’s steering or braking systems, the issue could be dangerous if a vehicle stalled while traveling at high speeds. The stalling issue could lead to a heightened risk of crashes.
Vehicles subject to the recall include Toyota Prius and Auris hybrid vehicles that were manufactured between October of 2008 and November of 2014. While the vehicles were recalled for an earlier problem, the stalling issue was not addressed or fixed because the company had not identified the problem yet.
The majority of vehicles subject to the recall are in Japan, where 1.25 million cars were recalled. In the United States, 807,000 vehicles were recalled, in Europe 290,000 and in Chica 3,000. The other vehicles that were recalled are in various places around the world.
According to Toyota, the problem had been reported in Japan on three occasions by the end of September 2018. None of the stalling issues led to traffic accidents. The automobile manufacturer did not state whether there had been other reported cases outside of Japan.
Vehicle safety recalls are typically issued by vehicle manufacturers. However, in some instances, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) can issue a recall when the company has not done so, and the vehicles pose a safety risk.
