Lighted bed canopies recall
EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. — WRPI 12 announced that Tween Brands, in conjunction with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, issued a consumer recall of over 23,000 bed canopies with attached lights due to safety concerns. Tween Brands admitted that the lighted canopies might catch fire or cause a burn due to the lightbulbs overheating. Thankfully, Tween Brands received no reports of serious injuries or deaths resulting from overheating lightbulbs. Tween Brands did receive several complaints concerning minor property damage. Justice, the retail outlet which sold the items, full give consumers who return the recalled product to them a full refund.
Tween Brands reported that three models of its light-up bed canopies are subject to recall. They are Justice Light Up Canopy White with product numbers 215218, 775218, Justice Canopy Light Up Pink bearing product numbers 215219, 775219, and Justice Light Up Canopy Blue with product numbers 215220, 775220.
Tween Brands learned of several dangers inherent in these products. One customer reportedly suffered a minor burn from an overheated canopy. Also, the company received 17 reports of the wiring, the mesh canopy, or the lights melting from overheated lightbulbs. One of those reports originated from Canada where Tween Brands also markets its products.
Tween Brands received news that the overheated bulbs caused damage to the bedding. One pillowcase was scorched, and at least two others reported burning or melting to bedding near which the canopy lights fell. All damage reported to Tween Brands was described as minor. There were no reports of serious wounds or property loss.
Justice is the only retailer who sold the items. Justice offered them in-store or online for anywhere between $11.00 and $40.00. Not all canopies sold by Justice are subject to recall. The recalled items were manufactured between July 2017 and October 2018. Consumers who have questions or concerns should direct their inquiries to the Justice retail company.
