UK- Tvnz.co.nz reports that two separate accidents that killed two young girls were not the only bouncy Castle incidents in Britain. Over the course of the last eight years, there have been 22 serious injuries reported because of these inflatables.
About one month ago Summer Grant, 7, died after being thrown from a bouncy castle. About two weeks earlier Ava-May Little boy, 3, also died in a similar way. In Ava-May’s case, prosecution of fairground workers took place, but it is often the case that no one is held accountable for these tragedies.
One person was injured recently when the bouncy castle lifted off the ground because of high winds. There are guidelines for the maximum wind speed these devices can be set up in, but that rule was not followed. Legally, the maximum wind speed that these devices are allowed to be set up in is 24 mph. In two of the recent accident, the wind speed was higher.
In the United States, bounce houses have increased in popularity in recent years. Along with the increased use though has come an increase in injuries resulting from bounce house accidents. One problem seen in numerous cases is that the houses can lift off the ground during gusts of wind. This is what caused severe injuries to two boys in New Hampshire last year. The 7 and 3-year-old children were whisked off the ground as if they were riding in a “giant balloon.”
According to USA Today, four people were killed in bounce house accidents in the United States since the year 2000. These devices often are not regulated and can be set up by people who are not trained in how to maintain children’s safety in bounce houses.
