NHTSA Investigating Volvo’s Safety Over Its Electronic Throttle Module Issues. Volvo’s safety image suffered a minor black eye last week.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a preliminary evaluation to investigate an electronic throttle module.
The probe involves 1999 to 2001 models of Volvo’s C70, S60, S70, S80, V70 and V70XC that use the component. That’s a total of 266,000 vehicles.
NHTSA Received 136 Complaints
In its report, NHTSA says it has received 136 complaints that vehicles experienced a sudden loss of speed and steering problems in highway traffic, as well as random stalling. Replacing the component hasn’t helped; consumers have told NHTSA that the new part also fails.
The agency says one accident and two injuries have been linked to the problem.
Volvo had to recall 460,000 cars last September as a result of a malfunctioning electronic fan control module that could cause a fire in the engine compartment.
