According to an online news report published on stcatharinesstandard.ca, a massive recall of over 40,000 YETI coolers was initiated after reports of potentially deadly magnet ingestion risks. Swallowing small magnets can cause serious injuries, emergency surgeries, and even death. When multiple magnets are swallowed, they can attract each other through the walls of the intestines, potentially leading to a blockage, perforation, or tearing of the intestinal tissue. The attraction between the magnets can also cause pressure, leading to tissue death or infection.
The severity of the injury depends on the size, shape, and strength of the magnets, as well as the location in the body where they are lodged. Ingesting multiple magnets or a single large magnet increases the risk of complications.
Symptoms of magnet ingestion may include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. If you suspect that you or someone you know has ingested magnets, seek medical attention immediately. Delaying medical treatment can lead to severe complications, such as intestinal blockages, tissue damage, or even death.
To prevent accidental ingestion, keep small magnets and magnet-containing toys away from children, as they may mistake them for candy or small toys. Additionally, be aware of the potential dangers of magnetic jewelry and accessories, which can be accidentally swallowed and cause serious harm.
